03. CREATIVE METHODOLOGY
As a measurement of success, our design approach looks to satisfy each of the project’s individual goals and requirements. We iterate through UX and design revisions collaboratively – each pass sculpting a more polished and intuitive visual system.
A. Divergent Thinking
Without the limitations of potential feasibility constraints, our design and development teams together begin to compile expansive lists of concepts. We capture any and every idea that comes to light during these sessions, often arriving at innovations through seemingly improbable concept rabbit-holes.
B. Convergent Concepting
Once we’ve accumulated a mass of divergent ideation, we begin to assess feasibility and hone in on those with the most potential. Factors such as business requirements, cost benefit analysis, and concept overlap all play a role in which abstract ideas advance into the formal design process.
C. Visual Iteration
With the finalized concepts in-hand, the design team begins rough sketches. These initial drafts are internally critiqued and improved upon until they’re in a suitable state to be introduced as a core look-and-feel direction. Pixel-perfect mocks are subsequently created and further refined to reach project goals.
D. Prototyping
Digital design, however, extends beyond what can be expressed in a static “flat file” – animation, micro-interactions, and responsiveness must also be considered. In parallel to the creative workstream, our front-end developers create prototypes and proof-of-concepts as needed to showcase these more behavioral aspects.
04. DEVELOPMENT METHODOLOGY
Instead of conforming to a strict methodology company-wide, we choose a workflow that best fits the project — typically balancing rigid linear phases with the nimbleness of more fluid strategies. Throughout this hybrid workflow, we iteratively hone-in on the final, polished deliverables.
05. TYPICAL PHASE OVERLAP
While not always accurate, below is a typical overview of high-level phases and major engagement milestones. Some of these phases may be handled internally by the client or by project partners.
06. NEW BUSINESS
If you'd like a project quote or are looking to partner with RANGER, please email contact@rngr.org
01. SELECT CLIENTS
Partnering with innovative startups, niche boutiques, and industry-leading enterprises alike, our clients share one common trait — vision. Driven by their inspiration, we transform that vision into reality.
02. CASE STUDY – OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE
Directus
RANGER has spent the past 9 years concepting, designing, developing, and maintaining this free and open-source client-facing database GUI to serve as a CMS for scalable, custom-schema projects. Its primary advantage over other CMS is that it's completely decoupled from the application code. This allows engineers to create custom database architectures based on specific project needs, design websites and applications without any limitations, and follow any development workflow.
03. CASE STUDY – CLIENT
The Mill
Exemplifying a typical client engagement with RANGER, The Mill website overhaul included a complete data restructuring, creative consulting, and a ground-up responsive website and content administration build. The site was built with several layers of modularity to provide the client with the ability to create granularly tailored layouts within the custom CMS.
Site Design: Avec
04. CASE STUDY – INFRASTRUCTURE
SoulCycle
After a comprehensive systems audit, it was discovered that for SoulCycle to maintain usability at scale a complete digital infrastructure overhaul would be required. In parallel to building their new e-commerce website, RANGER designed and developed SoulCycle's entire administrative ecosystem from the ground up – including their point-of-sale, internal reporting systems, and class/instructor scheduling.
Initial Design: IDEO
05. CASE STUDY – EXPERIENTIAL
AT&T Performing Arts Center
RANGER developed a dynamic experience wall for the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Texas to engage visitors and passersby alike. At 9 feet tall by 18 feet wide, this large scale dynamic installation visualizes all the activity going on in the center by using an origami design that is constantly unfolding to reveal new content, repurposed from the PAC website, Twitter, Facebook, and images taken around the center.
Interface Design: 2×4
06. CASE STUDY – COLLABORATIVE
Interbrand
As a long-time partner, we’ve worked with Interbrand on numerous client projects, but when the world’s leading brand consultancy asks you to build their own web platform – you can’t help but feel honored. We helped Interbrand envision new possibilities, guided their internal design concepts, and built their new forward-looking web application.
07. CASE STUDY – CONCEPTING
Google Search App
RANGER has worked on many projects with Google over the years, but one of the more open-ended involved generating unexpected concepts for driving engagement for the Google Search App. To successfully bridge the gap between the digital and physical world, RANGER utilized our history of experiential and installation work to produce ideation outside of traditional media channels.
08. CASE STUDY – LAB
Experiments
When a developer at RANGER has an interesting idea that they want to test out without the constraints of polished design or browser compatibility, Experiments is where they build it. RANGER Experiments is our playground for the little bits of code we create for alpha testing or proof-of-concepts. While many components born here are eventually refined enough to graduate into an actual project, some are just fun to play around with.
